Day 18

Catholic Health Training Institute

Flights from Juba generally leave quite early in the morning, and today was no exception.  Emmanuel and Samuel made all of the arrangements and got me to the airport in time to check in and wait for my flight to Wau, where I was met by Martin, one of the administrators there, and taken to the Catholic Heath Training Institute.

After a short drive to the town of Wau, we reached the beautiful campus of the Catholic Health Training Institute, a rather modern facility built by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sudan/South Sudan before the Civil War.

Here I met two wonderful women religious, Sister Maria Fe, on the left, and Sister Esperance, on the right.  Sister Maria Fe, from the Philippines, is a faculty member, and Sister Esperance, from the Congo, is the director of CHTI.  I enjoyed several wonderful days living with and getting to know these wonderful Sisters and learning about the operation at CHTI.

A Morning Assembly at the campus of the Catholic Health Training Institute (CHTI) in Wau, a three-year program which graduates nurses, midwives, and other medical professionals to meet the health care needs of the people of South Sudan.  As is the case at the Solidarity Teacher Training College in Yambio, the students here are all on full scholarships that cover tuition, fees, room, and board.  CHTI becomes their home away from home for the duration of the program.
