International Day of Education

Today, on International Day of Education, we celebrate stories that transform the world. Like that of Maria, 22, a student at the Catholic Heath Training institute (CHTI) in Wau, who dreams of becoming a midwife in South Sudan:

My father died before I was born, leaving my mother, a farmer, to struggle as a single mother. I am the last child and none of my siblings had an education. They had to sell some cows to put me through primary and secondary school. (…) After graduation, I will work with confidence. I will come back and serve my community and they will understand why I have been away from home for so long … to study and come home with skills that will help them.

Education is the most powerful weapon for development. In South Sudan, CHTI is training a new generation of health workers who are helping to strengthen the country’s health system. Thanks to their efforts, thousands of women and children have access to quality health care.

Help us ensure that Maria and other young women like her can complete their studies and become the midwives South Sudan needs. Together, we can create a lasting impact on the lives of thousands.
