The Solidarity with South Sudan family mourns the passing of Father Fratern Masawe, SJ (1956–2026), a charismatic figure of extraordinary humanity and a constant point of reference for the mission in the country. In addition to serving as Assistant ad Providentiam to the Superior General of the Society of Jesus (Father Arturo Sosa) and as Regional Assistant for Africa and Madagascar at the General Curia in Rome, Father Fratern had been a member of the Solidarity Board since 2018. With unwavering dedication, he always placed his evangelical vision and his pastoral and organizational wisdom at the service of the formation and development of the South Sudanese people. Anyone who worked alongside him remembers his profound humility, his willingness to help, and that welcoming and gentle smile with which he faced every challenge. His commitment to service never wavered: even during periods of illness, Father Fratern continued to offer his attentive, engaged and passionate presence, never failing to provide his close moral support and closeness to the Solidarity community.
The funeral took place last Friday in Rome, at the Church of Santa Maria in Traspontina on Via della Conciliazione, preceded the evening before by a prayer vigil held in the Borgia Chapel at the General Curia of the Jesuits. The solemn funeral service was attended by fellow Jesuits, friends and representatives of the mission who had come to pay tribute to a life entirely devoted to the least among us. ‘‘Let nothing disturb you, all things are passing, God never changes.” May he rest in peace.
