Elections at risk: the opposition rejects the December vote, echoing the Church’s concerns

 

Another update from South Sudan, where yet another political storm is brewing ahead of the December vote, as the opposition launches harsh warnings in a bid to halt the electoral process. Opposition representatives argue that the country is still too unstable and dangerous to hold an election. This deep concern only serves to confirm the fears already expressed by Catholic Church leaders: without a Constitution in place, with local conflicts still ongoing and millions of refugees unsure whether or how they will vote, there is a risk that this election will reignite old and painful tensions rather than bring peace.
