| To mark International Literacy Day (8 September), we share a story of hope and empowerment from the village of Naangere, in Western Equatoria Province, South Sudan. Launched as part of the Sustainable Agriculture in Riimenze project promoted by Solidarity with South Sudan, the local literacy programme demonstrates how education and mutual support can bring about positive change even in the most isolated communities. The results achieved in recent months are extraordinary and provide tangible proof of the fundamental value of learning. Of the more than one hundred students enrolled in the various courses, attendance is almost 100 per cent. Many children and young people have learnt to write their own names independently, are taking their first steps in reading simple words and sentences, and are confidently tackling their first maths problems, from basic counting to column addition and subtraction.  But literacy goes far beyond the school desk: it is a means of empowerment and dignity. Parents and teachers report a profound transformation in the young pupils, who are showing new self-confidence, greater personal care and a deep respect for others.
The greatest value of this initiative lies in bringing the community together: the village families have taken the initiative themselves to protect their children’s right to education, working together to support the school and organizing small collections to ensure a contribution for the volunteer cooks who prepare meals for the children. Ensuring access to education and supporting projects like this does not mean imposing solutions from above, but rather giving communities the tools to write their own future independently.
