Merry Christmas! Sharing the light of hope

 

Dear Sister, dear Father, dear Brother,

Many greetings to all of you from Solidarity with South Sudan together with best wishes for Holy Christmas and the New Year 2025.

As Christmas approaches, we would like to share a moment of reflection on our collective commitment and ongoing efforts to support the people of South Sudan, always inspired by the hope of a future of peace and dignity.

We are writing at a time of extreme difficulty for South Sudan. Every day presents a growing challenge, and people are facing an increasingly harsh environment. The ongoing war in Sudan has forced over 830,000 refugees—more than half of them children—into South Sudan, worsening an already dire situation of food shortages and the lack of health care. Resources like food and water are scarce, with over 1.7 million children suffering from severe malnutrition. Security is fragile, and economic struggles, including currency devaluation and the rising costs of essential food items, make daily life increasingly difficult. Additionally, climate change continues to have a severe impact, with over 1.3 million people affected by floods and around 327,000 displaced because of this unsustainable human activity. However, we have not lost our hope. On the contrary, we accept this challenge and maintain our commitment with all our energy. It is a privilege for us to be present in this periphery and to be a source of encouragement, working alongside the local church and with the South Sudanese people.
