| Today, 9 July 2025, we celebrate the 14th anniversary of South Sudan’s independence. It is a day that evokes memories of immense joy and the fervent hope for a peaceful future. Despite the significant challenges we face today, from conflict to the humanitarian crisis that is putting the South Sudanese people to the test, Bishop Christian Carlassare of the Diocese of Bentiu offers us a touching message of hope and strength for this special day, reminding us that: “independence is not a destination. It is a journey. A journey we must walk together—with hope, with patience, and with determination. Let us renew our commitment today to build a country that is peaceful, inclusive, and just.”
The Bishop also emphasizes the need to embrace peace as a daily commitment, investing in non-violence, truth and justice. It is essential to strive for good governance, free from corruption, with fair and credible elections. He also stresses the importance of empowering the people through education, a right of every child, and promoting the role of young people and women in society and decision-making processes. We firmly believe in the potential of this nation and in the ability of its citizens to overcome the challenges they face. We place great hope in the future of peace and reconciliation that South Sudan deserves and for which we continue to work with dedication and prayer. Their resilience is our inspiration, and their quest for peace is our mission.
