The Catholic Diocese of Bentiu in South Sudan, the country’s newest diocese, is preparing for its Centenary celebrations in May 2025. The event will commemorate the arrival of the first Catholic missionaries in the area in 1925, marking nearly a century of evangelization. Bishop Christian Carlassare, in his December 8 pastoral message, emphasized the theme of “Pilgrims of Hope” for the 2025 Jubilee Year. He reflected on the challenges facing the Diocese, including suffering from conflict, floods, poverty, and displacement, and highlighted the need for peace and hope.
Bishop Carlassare recognized the resilience of the local Nuer people and their long journey of faith despite difficult conditions. He underscored that the centenary is not just a celebration of the past but a call to continue the mission of evangelization, urging the community to take steps toward peace and better living conditions. He also noted that hope, rooted in God’s promises, is essential for overcoming adversity. The Bishop closed his message by urging preparation for the coming of Christ, calling for reconciliation and fraternity within the community.
