The story of Zakia, proud teacher

 

We are pleased to share the story of Zakia John Idriss, a primary school teacher who graduated from the Solidarity Teacher Training College (STTC) in May 2023. Despite many adversities, she succeeded in realising her wish to become a qualified teacher. Today, she is also going to graduate in Primary Education after an additional one-year course at STTC.

“I was born in November 1995 in Kerker Village, Nuba Mountains, Sudan. I am the fifth child in my family. My father, John Idriss, was happily married to two wives. I have eighteen siblings altogether, and we all lived in a joint family. My mother, Kakali Osman, was a hardworking housewife. My parents worked on the farm, cultivating sorghum, maize, sesame, and groundnuts. I have great love for my parents and siblings, and they supported me in my primary education as I showed a strong interest in learning from a very young age. Unfortunately, I could not pursue my secondary school education because war broke out, and all the schools were closed. Due to war and violence, my family members were scattered to different parts of the country as refugees. My dream of completing my studies was shattered. I fled my home to save my life and ended up in Yida refugee camp, in the north of South Sudan. Life was extremely difficult…”
