| Living and working in Wau, in the state of Western Bahr El Ghazal, means facing complex challenges on a daily basis. Amid regional political instability and an economic crisis that is sending the prices of food, fuel and basic necessities soaring, daily life is far from easy for many families. Cash shortages and the high cost of living create uncertainty, but there is one reality that never ceases, and that is the Catholic Health Training Institute (CHTI), a community that has the strength to carry on each day with confidence and determination. Here is what keeps our motivation alive:
The warmth and esteem of the local population, around 98 per cent of whom are Christian and hold Catholic institutions, and those who work there, in deep respect. The Church’s neutrality allows us to be a safe point of reference for everyone, working in peaceful dialogue with the local people. Our students: true angels on the wards. At this time of severe economic crisis, many public sector workers have been forced to leave hospital services. Filling this huge gap are the nursing and midwifery students at CHTI! With extraordinary dedication, they are manning the area’s hospitals, ensuring care, support and safe births for those who need it most. The (clean!) energy that never runs out. Whilst soaring fuel costs have forced many facilities to remain in the dark, our institute continues to operate at full capacity thanks to solar power. Our solar panels provide us with electricity 24 hours a day, allowing us to continue our training and care without any interruption. Continuing to train the healthcare professionals of tomorrow is not just our job: it is our mission for the future of South Sudan.
