Catholic Bishop Christian Carlassare, of the Diocese of Bentiu, emphasised the importance of properly preparing South Sudan for its first democratic elections, scheduled for December 2026. The country, which has been independent from Sudan since 2011, is severely unprepared for the electoral process, and Carlassare urged not to put all the attention on the election result but to focus first on preparing the ground, so that the democratic process is guaranteed as a result of maturity from below.
To date, the government of national unity has postponed the elections several times due to delays in the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement. Carlassare promised to work with the Diocese of Bentiu to educate citizens on the electoral process, arguing that nation-building must be based on the common good. The Bishop concluded by recalling the values of justice, freedom and prosperity in the country’s symbol, which must be interconnected for true democratic growth.
