| I volunteered to join Solidarity with South Sudan, inspired by my congregational charism of helping the poorest of the poor. In 2011, South Sudan was it. My 8-year stint there was beyond wonderful. First, it opened my eyes to the great untapped model of inter-congregational work of
evangelization. Solidarity brings together the resources, missionary inspiration and commitment to help build up the young country of South Sudan and the local Church. The nation’s current conflictive situation may eclipse it for now, but the service Solidarity renders in building the capacity of nurses, midwives, teachers and pastoral workers will have lasting impact. Second, living together as communities at the service of the Church’s evangelizing mission made us treasure our common religious calling and at the same time deepen our individual congregational charisms. From one another we learned how to live a deep spirituality, simple lifestyle, creative, generous and joyful common life. Third, forever etched in my memory is the overwhelming gratefulness of the South Sudanese whom I have grown to love. All in all, it was an experience of grace that continues to transform my life as a Vincentian and as a member of our human community. Fr. Manny Ginete, C.M.
