The Bishops’ Appeal: “Revenge is not justice”

The bishops of the Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SSSCBC) have issued an official statement strongly condemning the recent brutal killings of innocent civilians in the counties of Ayod and Abiemnhom. In this heartfelt appeal, the Church firmly rejects the culture of revenge and calls on the South Sudanese authorities and people to embark on a path of justice and national conversion during this time of Lent.

Faced with the loss of innocent lives and the scourge of revenge, the bishops raise a clear voice: “Revenge is not justice. Blood for blood is not dignity.”

It is not just a matter of condemning violence, but of actively choosing the difficult path of justice, reconciliation, and respect for the sanctity of life.

As Solidarity, we stand with the affected communities and with Bishops Stephen Nyodho of Malakal and Christian Carlassare of Bentiu, who courageously accompany these wounded territories. Healing the wounds of the past also means refusing to normalize these massacres and committing ourselves to a future where peace is the presence of truth and love.
