 The arrival of the early rains brings with it new life and opportunities at the demonstration farm of the Sustainable Agriculture Project in Riimenze (SAP-R), where the tireless work of the community is transforming the land into a precious resource for all. During this period, activity is frantic with planting and weeding, with particular attention to groundnuts, which already cover some feddans of soil. The farm represents much more than simple agricultural production; it has become a vital cornerstone for the local economy, offering daily employment to dozens of casual workers. Thanks to this commitment, many families can count on a reliable income to pay for their children’s school fees, creating a virtuous cycle of empowerment.The results of this collective effort are extraordinary, showing a steady growth in harvests, from matooke (banana fruit) to sweet potatoes, as well as the propagation of fruit trees such as mangoes and pawpaws. The farm is also notable for growing rare fruits such as dragon fruit and for expanding its coffee plantations, the proceeds from which are reinvested to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability. In addition to production, the farm serves an educational and training purpose, as it enables the local community, including internally displaced people who have settled near the parish, to acquire practical skills and advanced agricultural techniques to build, together, a more resilient future. |
