Sudan and South Sudan’s Bishops call for urgent action amid humanitarian crises and violence

At the end of their plenary meeting held in Malakal from 10 to 14 November 2025, gathered under the theme “Building Peace, Healing Wounds and Strengthening Unity”, the Catholic bishops of Sudan and South Sudan sounded a worried alarm about the humanitarian crisis and violence in both countries. They openly condemned the degeneration of peace agreements and the abandonment of dialogue as a means of reconciliation. They lamented how political interests have triggered a spiral of violence, humanitarian crises and ethnic and tribal divisions, leading to a situation of serious human rights violations against the population. They also denounced the misappropriation of abundant national resources for the luxury of a few, to the detriment of widespread poverty.
Reminding leaders that “to lead is to serve’ and that ‘peace is not only the absence of war, but the work of justice,” the prelates concluded their message by reaffirming the Church’s hope and commitment to remain a “beacon of healing and unity.” They encouraged the clergy and faithful to intensify their prayers for lasting peace, emphasising that “the power of God that surrounds us is greater than the challenges we face”.
