Celebrating Fifteen Years of Independence: South Sudan’s Journey of Resilience

Today, 9 July 2026, South Sudan commemorates the fifteenth anniversary of its independence. This celebration provides an important opportunity to reflect critically on the country’s challenges since 2011, as well as to assess the progress achieved in its political, social, and economic development. While significant progress has been made in several sectors, including governance, healthcare, education, and agriculture, substantial structural constraints continue to hinder sustainable national development. This anniversary therefore represents both a celebration of resilience and a renewed commitment to addressing the country’s development priorities.

Governance remains one of the principal challenges facing South Sudan. It continues to face difficulties, with peace agreements advancing slowly and corruption affecting public trust. Efforts to strengthen leadership and community resilience remain central to building lasting peace. Solidarity with South Sudan (SwSS), has contributed through pastoral formation and leadership training, empowering grassroots leaders to foster reconciliation.

Healthcare remains a critical concern, as South Sudan records some of the highest maternal and child mortality rates globally. Limited infrastructure and insecurity compound these challenges. Through the Catholic Health Science Institute (CHSI), Solidarity, is playing a significant role in strengthening the national health workforce by training hundreds of nurses and midwives who now serve communities throughout the country. Looking forward, the Institute intends to expand its academic programs to include the training of laboratory technicians.

The education sector has demonstrated gradual improvement, as evidenced by increasing school enrolment and modest gains in literacy. However, armed conflict, displacement, poverty, etc., continue to prevent many children from accessing quality education. Solidarity, through its Teacher Training Programs, addresses these challenges by preparing qualified teachers, thereby strengthening the education system and expanding opportunities for improved learning outcomes and literacy development across the country.

Agriculture remains the backbone of livelihoods for the majority of South Sudanese. However, the combined effects of floods, droughts associated with climate change, the influx of refugees, and recurrent localized violence have placed considerable pressure on agricultural production and household food security. Through its Sustainable Agriculture Project, Solidarity is promoting climate-resilient farming practices, strengthens local agricultural capacity, and supports farming communities in improving productivity.

This anniversary serves as both a celebration of resilience and a call to action. Continued investment in governance, healthcare, education, and agriculture supported by initiatives such as Solidarity with South Sudan and its supporters will be essential to building a peaceful, resilient, and sustainable future of South Sudanese.
