| During his visit to Juba, the African Union High Representative, Jakaya Kikwete, made a heartfelt appeal to the leaders of South Sudan, urging them to join forces to ensure the country holds peaceful and successful elections, scheduled for 22 December 2026. Following talks with President Salva Kiir and various political representatives, Kikwete expressed cautious optimism, saying he was encouraged by the progress made by the Electoral Commission and the initial deployment of the unified security forces. The road to the polls remains an uphill struggle, however: to make this important democratic milestone a reality, the country will have to overcome a number of practical challenges, including pressing financial constraints and the deep-seated reservations of certain long-standing opposition factions. It should be noted that this new election date follows a long series of postponements that began as far back as 2015 due to the civil war. The latest postponement was decided in September 2024, delaying the vote by two years due to yet another delay in technical and security preparations.
