| The Local Ordinary of the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba, South Sudan, Stephen Cardinal Ameyu Mulla, has called on the clergy of his metropolitan see to promote interreligious dialogue and inculturation in their priestly ministry.
In his homily at the concluding Eucharistic Celebration of the five-day spiritual retreat for Catholic priests of his metropolitan see, Cardinal Ameyu warned against ‘abstract’ preaching, recalling instead the importance of a ‘down-to-earth’ theology, accessible to the people, and of ongoing formation of the clergy. Reflecting on the Gospel reading on Friday (14 March) of the first week of Lent, he called for overcoming the spirituality of the Pharisees, nourishing faith and making God’s presence felt, criticising the use of religion as an instrument of oppression. He called for reconciliation and unity, overcoming grudges, and hoped that the spiritual retreat would be an opportunity for renewal and fraternity. Finally, the Cardinal reiterated the importance of a united Church, free from divisions, and encouraged priests to seek reconciliation with the Lord in the name of social justice.
