South Sudan is experiencing unprecedented flooding this year. Beginning in May, heavy rains, compounded by the flooding of Lake Victoria, have caused the River Nile to overflow, submerging villages and agricultural land. So far, over 890,000 people have been impacted nationwide, with recent rains in the Abyei administrative area, as well as Western Bahr el Ghazal and Lakes States, contributing to a further increase in those affected. Approximately 226,000 individuals have been displaced, with Unity State alone accounting for 114,480 of these displacements. Severe damage to roads has rendered many areas inaccessible, complicating efforts to deliver vital assistance to affected communities. On 3 October, the Council of Ministers approved the declaration of a state of emergency in the flood-affected states. Download HERE the October 2024 South Sudan Floods Snapshot from OCHA
