Change story: From escape to teaching, the strength of Amani, a South Sudanese woman

For the Change Stories cycle…

Amani Isamail Abushanab, STTC graduate from Nuba Mountains

Amani Ismail Abushanab, originally from the Nuba Mountains, lived as a refugee in the Yida camp in South Sudan after fleeing the conflict in 2011. Despite numerous difficulties, including obstacles related to gender restrictions, Amani managed to continue her studies in the camp. Thanks to a scholarship sponsored by Solidarity, she could finally study at the Solidarity Teacher Training College (STTC) in Yambio, realising her dream of becoming a qualified teacher. After graduating, she returned to STTC for an additional course, financing herself with a loan and working as a teacher. Her dream is to return to her homeland and open a school.
