| In his message for Christmas 2025, Bishop Christian Carlassare, Bishop of Bentiu and Apostolic Administrator of Rumbek, described South Sudan as a ‘living parable of Christmas’, a place where the deep wounds of conflict and poverty cannot stifle a hope that he calls a ‘stubborn seed’, capable of sprouting even in the most arid soil.
Reflecting on twenty years of mission among this people, the Bishop reminded us that Christmas is a celebration of closeness: God does not reveal himself in power, but in the fragility of the manger, choosing to dwell precisely where humanity suffers and waits. Monsignor Carlassare invites us to look at the world through the eyes of the Child of Bethlehem, placing the poor at the centre of the mission, not as mere recipients of aid, but as true teachers and ‘first evangelisers’. His is a concrete dream for a future of dignity, where resources become instruments of peace and every child can grow up without fear, certain that God’s love is capable of repairing what we have broken and transforming poverty into a starting point for true solidarity.
