A Lifetime of Faith: The Inspiring Journey of Catechist Gedio Omigi Fastino

“We Had No Shepherds, Yet We Never Lost Our Faith.”

Some encounters leave a lasting impression on the heart. During the Advanced Catechists’ Formation Programme organized by Solidarity with South Sudan in June 2026, I had the privilege of meeting one such remarkable witness of faith—Mr. Gedio Omigi Fastino, a senior catechist from the Diocese of Torit.

Born in 1955, Mr. Fastino has faithfully served the Church since 1972, dedicating more than 53 years of his life to proclaiming the Gospel. Listening to his life story was deeply moving. His years of service are almost equal to my own age, and his unwavering commitment became a living testimony of what it means to remain faithful to Christ through every trial.

A Faith Tested by War

As he shared his personal testimony, one truth became clear: faith is strongest when it is lived in difficult times.

During the years of civil war, families were displaced, communities scattered, and many churches were left without bishops or priests. Communication became impossible, and many believers felt abandoned.

Recalling those painful years, he said:

“There were times when we were separated from our bishops and priests. We had no guidance, no shepherds, and no leadership. But we continued. Something within me kept pushing me to remain faithful. My only desire was to keep our people united in faith and to preserve the Church.”

Those simple yet powerful words reflect the heart of a true catechist—a servant who remains steadfast even when circumstances become unbearable.

Formation that Built Strong Foundations

Mr. Fastino attributes his perseverance to the solid formation he received from the bishops and priests who trained him in his early years. With gratitude he recalled:

“I deeply appreciate the training given to us by our bishops and priests. They were dedicated and committed. They gave us a very strong grassroots formation that prepared us to face every challenge.”

His commitment to formation was further strengthened when he successfully completed a six-month Catechists’ Training Course at St. Peter’s Catechetical Center, Juba, on 15 December 1978. The programme covered Sacred Scripture, Pastoral Theology, Christian Doctrine, Liturgy, Church History, and Language Development, equipping him with a solid theological and pastoral foundation for his lifelong ministry. This formal training became a cornerstone of his remarkable service to the Church for more than five decades.

That foundation enabled him not only to remain faithful but also to become a source of strength for countless others.

A Lifelong Learner

Despite more than five decades of service, Mr. Fastino continues to seek formation with remarkable humility.

Reflecting on the programme, he shared:

“After many years, I have once again attended such a meaningful formation. I participated in the training organized by Solidarity with South Sudan in 2025, and I am grateful to be here again. This programme renews my knowledge of the Catechism and strengthens my spirit of commitment.”

His eagerness to keep learning reminds us that formation is a lifelong journey.

Recognizing the importance of continuous formation, Gedio Omigi Fastino attended the Catechist Training Workshop at Lobone Palotaka Parish, Diocese of Torit, from 9 to 14 December 2002. During this intensive training, he deepened his knowledge of the Catholic faith through studies in Catechism, Sacraments and Commandments, Liturgy, Homiletics, and Leadership. This formation equipped him with the spiritual and pastoral skills necessary to serve the Church more effectively and strengthened his lifelong commitment to proclaiming the Gospel and accompanying Christian communities with wisdom, dedication, and faith.

Speaking with great affection, he remembered the late Bishop Paride Taban, whom he described as a father to all catechists.

“Bishop Paride Taban had a special love for catechists. He highly valued our ministry. He provided us with uniforms and identity cards, recognizing our service and giving us dignity in the Church.”

This recognition inspired generations of catechists to continue serving with dedication and pride.

A Living Witness for the Church

Perhaps the most touching moment came when he looked around the training hall filled with younger catechists.

With a joyful smile he said:

“Today I am proud to be here because many of the catechists attending this formation were trained and encouraged by us. We are now reaping what we sowed many years ago.”

His words beautifully capture the legacy of faithful service: the seeds planted through sacrifice continue to bear fruit in new generations.

Meeting Mr. Gedio Omigi Fastino was far more than an interview—it was a personal encounter with a living witness of hope, perseverance, and missionary commitment.

His story reminds us that the Church continues to stand strong because of ordinary men and women who quietly dedicate their lives to Christ and His people. Through war, displacement, uncertainty, and countless hardships, faithful catechists like Mr. Fastino have kept the flame of faith alive.

As the Church in South Sudan continues to journey toward peace and renewal, may his witness inspire young catechists to embrace their vocation with courage, humility, and unwavering commitment.
