Today, 12 August, we celebrate International Day of Youth, an occasion to recognise the fundamental role of young people in shaping the future of the planet and society, and to empower them to fight for their fundamental rights as individuals and human beings.
Since its recent birth, South Sudan has been committed to building a more just and peaceful society, facing enormous challenges every day such as ethnic conflicts, displacement, gender inequality, youth unemployment, political instability and limited access to education and health care. The youth training and leadership project, promoted by the pastoral programme of Solidarity with South Sudan, aims to empower young people through Catholic teachings, promoting human dignity, solidarity, faith formation, social justice and moral character. The objectives of the project include personal and spiritual growth, leadership development, unity, collaboration and advocacy for justice and peace, through a variety of methods that meet the needs of the participants and foster effective communication and collaboration despite tribal and linguistic differences.
