Youths in South Sudanese Catholic Diocese “anxiously excited” about Jubilee in Rome

The Catholic youth of South Sudan, in particular of the Diocese of Rumbek, are experiencing a moment of “anxious excitement” in view of the Youth Jubilee in Rome (28 July – 3 August). Despite the enormous difficulties that the young people of this nation, the youngest in the world, have to face – first and foremost the complex procedures for obtaining visas that force them to make exhausting journeys, such as the one to Addis Ababa – their determination to participate in this event of “great spiritual significance” is palpable.

Sister Orla Treacy IBVM, who is coordinating the preparations, tells of the young people’s fervent anticipation and enthusiasm, fuelled also by the renewed interest in spiritual activities triggered by Pope Francis’ ecumenical visit to South Sudan in 2023. The young people of Rumbek have already participated in local pilgrimages, demonstrating a growing thirst for faith and a deep desire to feel part of the universal Church. Despite economic and bureaucratic challenges, a small group will represent South Sudan in Rome, where Mass in St Peter’s Square, cultural and spiritual initiatives, a penitential day and a final Mass presided over by Pope Leo XIV will await them.
