| Inter-congregational and international collaboration in South Sudan was very enriching for me. I found myself working with priests, Sisters, Brothers and lay people from approximately 20 different congregations and 20 different nationalities. In fact at one stage during my time in South Sudan, I found myself in a community of five sisters, one layman and myself in a remote missionary area. My overwhelming impression was that it all worked quite naturally. I did sometimes say to myself what would my Mother think? ‘You left home to join the Brothers and now you are living with five women, mostly much younger than yourself and you feel quite virtuous about it!’
But that is how it was in South Sudan. We were all there to help the very needy people in that new country and we each went about using our individual talents; but as part of a team that did witness to solidarity and mutual support. I am still inspired by the memory of some very ordinary, but holy, Solidarity members whose commitment to the Gospel values was outstanding. Joining Solidarity was a challenge but I am very grateful for the almost ten years I spent there. Br Bill Firman fsc
