The presentation of a clinical case study by third-year nursing students is one of the requirements for graduation to become professional nurses. The nursing case study is an in-depth examination of a patient’s situation, in which the student documents detailed information about the patient, from the initial history to diagnosis and treatment, also noting his/her own observations and reflecting on appropriate nursing care. Once a patient has been identified on the ward, the student takes a full history, makes a diagnosis and plans nursing care, offers discharge advice and then visits the patient twice in the community as part of follow-up care. This provides the student with practice in community nursing care.
