Pope Leo XIV greeted the world for the first time on Thursday with the words “Peace be with you all”

History unfolded in St. Peter’s Square on Thursday as the world witnessed the dawn of a new pontificate! Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a son of Chicago, was elected Pope Leo XIV, marking a momentous occasion as the first Pope hailing from the United States. From the central balcony, the 69-year-old Pontiff’s inaugural address resonated with a powerful message of peace, echoing the very greeting of the risen Christ: “Peace be with you all.” His words, spoken in Italian to the hundreds of thousands gathered below, extended this divine peace to hearts, families, and all corners of the earth. Pope Leo XIV’s arrival, heralded by the traditional “Habemus Papam,” was met with jubilant cheers, signaling the beginning of a new chapter for the Catholic Church under a shepherd committed to a “disarming, humble, and persevering peace” rooted in God’s boundless love. In his first address, he also paid tribute to his predecessor, the late Pope Francis, vowing to continue his legacy of blessing and underscoring the enduring message of God’s love and the ultimate triumph over evil. With a call for unity and dialogue, Pope Leo XIV urged the Church to be a builder of bridges, guiding humanity towards the light of Christ.
