Churches in South Sudan begin 70 days of peace prayers

On 10 June, the Christian churches of South Sudan began a 70-day campaign of prayer and fasting for peace, with the theme “Fulfill your good promises, O Lord.” The initiative, announced by the general secretary of the country’s Council of Churches, Pastor Tut Kony Nyang Kon, responds to a complex crisis characterized by armed conflict, food insecurity and displacement.

At a time of growing political tensions, exacerbated by the arrest of Vice President Riek Machar and the worsening humanitarian emergency (with over 2.3 million South Sudanese refugees), the churches are also taking responsibility for welcoming refugees fleeing the war in neighbouring Sudan. Pastor Kon called for continuous prayer, recalling the 70th anniversary of the start of the war in Sudan that led to South Sudan’s independence in 2011. He concluded: “Since then, South Sudan has longed for peace.”
