The Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan, Archbishop Séamus Patrick Horgan, has praised the country’s religious institutes for their significant contribution to the Church’s mission. He called them ‘an invaluable component’ of the Church in South Sudan.
During a meeting with members of the Sudan and South Sudan Bishops’ Conference (SSS-CBC) on 15 November at the Good Shepherd Peace Centre in Kit, Archbishop Horgan praised the priests and the work of the men and women religious, highlighting their efforts in serving the local Church, even in difficult circumstances. The Nuncio emphasised the importance of collaboration between religious institutes and diocesan leadership, reminding bishops of their responsibility to safeguard the autonomy of these institutes, while ensuring their alignment with the mission of the Church. He also emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in the management of financial resources, especially the subsidies of the Pontifical Missionary Works. In his address at the start of the SSS-CBC Plenary Assembly, Cardinal Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla acknowledged the importance of the Synod on Synodality and the Church’s role in addressing the challenges of Sudan and South Sudan, including political instability, social and economic difficulties, and interreligious relations. He called on the Church to mobilise resources to assist vulnerable populations and support peace and reconciliation. Cardinal Ameyu also addressed the issue of tribalism, which he described as a significant barrier to national cohesion and unity. He urged the Church to work to strengthen national and ecclesial unity. Despite the challenges, he called for resilience and commitment from the bishops, emphasising the Church’s mission to be a voice for the voiceless and a promoter of peace and solidarity.
