Light in the Darkness: Trauma Healing Workshop for the School for Visually Impaired Persons in Juba

The Rajaf Educational Centre for Visually Impaired Persons in Juba is not just a school, but a beacon of hope for visually impaired students in South Sudan. The school faces significant challenges on a daily basis, including a shortage of teaching materials, a lack of transport and the need for greater support for teaching staff and students.

Being a person with a disability in South Sudan means facing enormous obstacles every day. Many of these young people have lost their sight due to congenital or sudden illnesses that, in a context of extreme poverty and lack of accessible healthcare services, they have been unable to treat. Their stories are touching and highlight the inequality that a disability can create, making their journey not only a struggle for education, but a battle for dignity and independence.
In this context, the Solidarity with South Sudan Pastoral Service plays a fundamental role. For years, the Solidarity Pastoral Team has been accompanying and supporting teachers and students at the school through trauma healing workshops. These sessions, which also include training for trainers, offer a safe space to process suffering, overcome trauma and find the strength to continue fighting. The Pastoral Team’s intention sn’t just to provide material aid, but to nourish the soul and spirit, helping to build a future in which even those who live in darkness can find their own light.
